Directions for Making a Twig TeePee
- Start with three sturdy, upright branches. The length can vary based on how they are going to be used, but allow at least 6 to 8 inches to be pushed into the ground. Allen used poles that were 6 to 7 feet long.
- Gather them at the top and bind them with a piece of copper wire. Use needle nose pliers to help twist the metal into place and tuck the excess wire under for safety.
- Now the teepee is ready to be placed in the garden. Once you have decided on a location, push all three ends into the dirt about 6 to 8 inches. Position the legs far enough apart to make them sturdy, but equal distance from one another. These teepees work well in terra cotta containers, flower borders and raised beds.
- Connect the supporting poles with three lengths of wood, about 18 inches from the ground, by wrapping copper wire in a crisscross pattern.
- Cut and attach more wood pieces to form two "x" patterns on each side, positioning them so the upper "x" is about a foot below the top of the trellis. Add one more round of horizontal pieces just about the top "x" as a finishing touch.
