If you want homegrown apples, but don’t have much space, try the columnar variety. Columnar or colonnade apples can reach a height of 8 feet, they only grow about 2 feet wide. These trees will produce full sized fruit at about the same amount as a dwarf variety. Remove some of the smaller fruits in late spring to encourage others to grow larger in size.
A good time to plant any variety of fruit tree is February so keep that in mind if you are considering trying columnar apples. They are available bare root through mail order sources like Stark Brothers or Jung Seed beginning in late winter through early spring. Be sure to purchase more than one tree to ensure fruit set because they are not self-pollinating.
