I have just cleared a new bed for planting tulips. Should I put mulch over bed after planting to stop weed and grass growth? I didn’t know if it would slow growth of bulbs.
Mulch is not required for newly planted tulip bulbs, but it is helpful to retain moisture and keep the soil cool. Cover the area with 2 to 3 inches and be sure to factor this in with you planting depth. In general bulbs should be planted 3 times as deep as the bulb is high.
Apply the mulch just before the ground freezes. Applying it too early in the season, when the ground is still soft and warm, can invite burrowing rodents.
