While on a trip to Holland I discovered the unusual summer flowering bulb eucomis. I was captivated by the rosettes of strap-like leaves and elongated bloom stalks bearing flowers that, initially, resemble pineapples, hence the common name pineapple lily. I had to try some in my own garden and was delighted with the results. As the season passed the blooms grew taller and looked to me like beeswax candles topped with a spikey green jester’s hat.
