Nandina is an evergreen woody shrub that features lacy blade-shaped compound leaves. Panicles of white spring blooms ripen into berries just in time for holiday decorating in December.

These shrubs also have a lot to offer in the garden beyond the berries. The foliage turns a striking bronze in autumn and dwarf nandinas are excellent evergreens for small spaces.

Well-drained soil is about the only requirement for growing nandinas successfully. The foliage color is best when planted in full sun, but it will also grow in partial shade. In fact, the plant appreciates protection from intense afternoon sun.
