Gardeners often speak with such enthusiasm about certain plants you have to wonder if they are getting a kickback from somewhere. I once heard the director of a botanical garden speaking about a lily that grew 8 feet tall and bloomed in August.I just nodded my head, politely thinking, "Yeah right, probably more like 5 feet and blooms with the Asiatics and other lilies in my garden."

I am happy to say his description was no exaggeration and am embarrassed by my smug response.Particularly after he shared a few seeds with me to try in my garden. I planted them the next spring and they grew into small plants that over the course of the summer developed bulbs and a few even bloomed. This was astonishing for me! I grew a bulb from seed! The next year it even got better. The plants made the 8 foot mark as promised.
