Turkey Talk

Preservation of rare poultry breeds is something that I’m passionate about.  The space at the Garden Home Retreat affords me the luxury of finally being able to take an active part in this effort.  Not only am I able to raise breeds that are threatened such as the curly feathered Sebastopol geese, but I can also try my hand at breeding true blue turkeys.

Repeated inbreeding of true blue turkeys has created unstable genetics, resulting in birth defects.  My hope is to preserve and strengthen the genetics of the flock that we have at the Garden Home Retreat.

To do this I’ll have to step outside the gene pool and cross a true blue with other types of turkeys, which include “black from blue” and “splash.”

Now that’s a lot of turkey talk!  It’s really a numbers game and making sure I know who Mr. Tom has been spending his time with.

To that end I’ve design and had built a special turkey house.
