Meal time doesn’t get easier than a grilled cheese. This version raises the flavor bar with the addition of tomato, avocado, fresh basil and three types of cheeses.

Ingredients

  • butter
  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 4 slices tomatoes
  • 1/2 avocado, thinly sliced
  • 2 chopped fresh basil
  • red pepper flakes
  • garlic salt
  • 2 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 2 slices american cheese
  • 2 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat skillet over medium heat.
  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place two slices of bread in the hot skillet, buttered side down. Top the bread in the skillet with American cheese, tomatoes and avocados. Sprinkle with basil, red pepper flakes, and garlic salt. Add mozzarella and provolone to each sandwich and top with a slice of bread, buttered side facing up.
  3. Cook in the hot skillet until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, 3 to 4 minutes per side.
