Let’s face it, the vegetable garden isn’t the most colorful spot in fall. Broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, kale – that’s a whole lot of green. If you prefer a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds, I suggest planting a few flowers among your edibles. Violas, nasturtiums and pansies are excellent candidates for the cooler temperatures. And for a technicolor veggie garden next spring, slip a few tulip bulbs into the soil or containers.
You don’t have to give flowering annuals special consideration. They will thrive under the same care as your cool season vegetables and herbs. All like at least six hours of sun, consistent moisture and regular feeding. Now when it comes to fertilizer I recommend organic. It’s good for the environment and, hey, you’re going to eat what you are growing. At the farm I use Jobe’s Organics with biozome. It’s always given me great results because it actually adds nutrients to the soil.
