Pizza Pot

Here’s a great way to introduce children to the joy of gardening, plant a Pizza Pot. This is a summer container full of many of the plants that go into making pizza. If you ask kids to name their favorite food, they’ll usually say that it’s pizza. So why not take something they’re interested and turn it into a fun project?  Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Materials:

  • 20 inch diameter container with saucer
  • Bagged soil mix for containers
  • Cherry tomato plant
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Garlic chives
  • Curly parsley
  • Stake for tomato
  • all-purpose Plant Food 5-3-3

Herbs need a sunny location, so find a spot where you can place the container that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day.

Place the container on the saucer and then fill the pot up to about an inch from the top.

With the soil in place, start with the tomato, the plant that will grow in the center and will be tallest.

Then surrounding the tomato, plant the basil, oregano, curly parsley and garlic chives

When you are finished planting, put a stake in the center to help support the tomato and water the container with a mixture of water and an all-purpose fertilizer.

Encourage the children to regularly check on the container. This little project can help teach them many things, everything from how to grow their own food for making the dishes they enjoy, to the stewardship of caring for plants. And there’s no better way to celebrate a job well done than to have a slice of homemade pizza.
